Treatment by Cancer Type

Cancer is not a disease with a one-treatment-fits-all solution. With that in mind, Choice Cancer Care specializes in a variety of treatment options meant to improve patient outcomes based on the specific form of the disease at hand. While surgery, chemotherapy and/or radiation are commonly used to treat a wide variety of cancers, there are targeted treatments intended for use in cancers such as prostate and breast.

When these cancers are present, Choice Cancer Care patients may find their doctors recommend treatments that are different than standard surgical procedures, chemotherapy rounds and radiation treatments. They may include:

• Prostate Seed Therapy – This prostate-cancer-specific treatment is a type of radiation therapy. Rather than involve the use of an external beam, however, this form requires the implantation of tiny radioactive seeds right into the tumor cavity itself. These seeds deliver a low dose of radiation meant to kill cancer cells while preserving as much of the nearby tissue as possible. Prostate seed therapy, also known as brachytherapy, is only indicated in certain cases. Physicians at Choice Cancer Care are highly skilled with this procedure and can answer questions about its application potential in a particular case.

• Hidden Scar Breast Cancer Surgery – An advanced approach to removing breast cancer. The surgeon will place the incision in a location that is hard to see, so that the scar is not visible when the incision heals. As a result, there is little to no visible reminder of the surgery. Our surgeons are trained in Hidden Scar surgical techniques, and together, our goal is to deliver the best surgical treatment and experience.

• BSGI – This is a diagnostic procedure targeted specifically for rooting out breast cancers that may have been missed by mammography and ultrasound. The Breast-Specific Gamma Imaging procedure involves the use of a tracer agent and imaging technology to provide a better look at suspicious tissue.

• MammoSite Targeted Radiation Therapy – This breast specific radiation therapy works from the inside, providing a higher daily dose of radiation to the affected area. It offers the advantage of requiring a shorter treatment time overall while providing strong clinical results in regard to recurrence and survival rates.

• Hormone Therapy – The use of hormonal treatments may also be used in conjunction with surgery, chemotherapy and/or radiation for the treatment of breast and prostate cancer. For breast cancer, treatment involves measures that block estrogen’s ability to fuel cancer cells. For prostate cancer, the intent is to block testosterone from fueling cancer cell growth.

Cancer-specific treatments may be recommended as part of an overall strategy to combat this disease. To find out more, it is recommended that patients discuss their specific case directly with their physicians to determine the best course of action in regard to individual treatment.
